Crop plants: a model for evolution in response to climate change

As crops have dispersed across the globe, they have had to adapt to a wide range of novel conditions. As climates change, crop plants will be forced to adapt or face local extinction. In this project guided by Jeff Ross-Ibarra, REU students will to use computational tools to study genomic data from thousands of geo-referenced crop plants to understand historical adaptation to climate and make predictions about future adaptation. Potential projects include identifying genes important for adaptation, predicting crop success under different climate scenarios, or studying the evolutionary processes underlying adaptation.
